Troubleshooting SXP VPN

Most connection problems have a quick fix. Start with the 60-second checklist, then open the issue that matches what you're seeing.

The 60-second fix (solves most issues)
  1. Disconnect the VPN, then switch to a different server location and reconnect.
  2. Check your internet works without the VPN (open any website).
  3. Toggle airplane mode on and off to reset your network.
  4. Close and reopen the SXP VPN app, then connect again.

Common issues

The VPN won't connect at all

Usually this is one server location having a moment, not the whole app.

  1. Try a different server. Open the server list and pick another location — nearby countries connect fastest.
  2. Confirm your internet works with the VPN off. If nothing loads, the problem is the network, not the VPN.
  3. Restart the app — swipe it away from recent apps and open it again.
  4. Reset the network — toggle airplane mode, or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  5. Restart your phone if it still fails. This clears stuck VPN sessions in Android.

Some networks (offices, schools, certain public hotspots) intentionally block VPN connections. If the VPN works on mobile data but not on one specific Wi-Fi, that network is likely the cause.

Connected, but no internet

The VPN shows connected, but pages won't load. Work through these in order:

  1. Switch servers. The one you're on may be overloaded or temporarily down.
  2. Disconnect and reconnect to get a fresh session.
  3. Check battery optimization. Go to Android Settings → Apps → SXP VPN → Battery and allow unrestricted background use. Aggressive battery savers can break the tunnel silently.
  4. Restart your phone to fully reset Android's VPN routing.

If only one app has no internet while everything else works, see the app-specific issue below — Split Tunneling is the fix.

Keeps disconnecting

Frequent drops are almost always Android power management or an unstable network.

  1. Exclude SXP VPN from battery optimization (Settings → Apps → SXP VPN → Battery → Unrestricted). On some phones (Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Huawei) also enable “autostart” for the app.
  2. Use a nearby server — long-distance connections drop more on weak signals.
  3. Avoid switching networks mid-session where possible; moving between Wi-Fi and mobile data forces reconnects.
  4. Check signal strength. A VPN can't stay up on a connection that keeps cutting out underneath it.

Tip: if privacy during drops matters to you, enable Kill Switch so traffic never continues unprotected while the app reconnects.

Speed is slow with the VPN on

Every VPN adds some overhead — but big slowdowns usually mean a suboptimal server choice.

  1. Pick the closest server to your real location. Distance is the #1 speed factor.
  2. Try 2–3 different locations. Server load varies through the day.
  3. Test on Wi-Fi vs mobile data to rule out a slow underlying connection.
  4. Reconnect — a fresh session sometimes lands you on a faster route.

For apps that don't need VPN protection, you can use Split Tunneling to keep them on your direct connection at full speed.

No internet when the VPN is off

If your internet stops entirely whenever the VPN disconnects, that's the Kill Switch doing its job — it blocks unprotected traffic when the tunnel is down.

  1. Reconnect the VPN to restore protected browsing. This is the recommended option.
  2. Or turn Kill Switch off temporarily in SXP VPN settings if you need internet without the VPN right now. Remember to re-enable it after.

One specific app won't work with the VPN

Some apps — banking, local services, certain games — behave differently when their traffic goes through a VPN server.

  1. Open SXP VPN → Split Tunneling.
  2. Exclude the problem app so it uses your normal connection.
  3. Reconnect the VPN and test the app again.

Everything else stays protected — only the excluded app bypasses the tunnel. Read our Split Tunneling guide for what's safe to exclude.

Another VPN app is interfering

Android only allows one active VPN at a time. If another VPN app is installed and set as "always-on", SXP VPN can't take over the connection.

  1. Go to Android Settings → Network & internet → VPN.
  2. Tap the gear icon next to any other VPN and turn off "Always-on VPN".
  3. Disconnect or uninstall VPN apps you no longer use.
  4. Open SXP VPN and connect again.
